Xavier rudd montreal jazz fest5/4/2023 "It's a beautiful, powerful culture, a gift to our planet, and the fact that it's not celebrated and there's a weird attitude to it in Australia blows my mind. "Overseas, people are receptive to Aboriginal culture, the stories and what's going on and how it is for that culture," he says. He is one of the most prominent white Australian musicians to incorporate the music of indigenous Australians into his music. Rudd is outspoken on the mistreatment of Aborigines, as well as environmental and humanity issues, wilderness protection and conservation. Recent overseas shows have seen him teaming up with drummer Bobby Alu, a pairing he will repeat for his Australian tour. Since 2007's White Moth, all of his albums have gone top 10 on the ARIA album charts and his concerts are celebratory dance parties, the one-man-band Rudd playing didgeridoos, guitars, drums, harmonicas, banjos and a stomp box with his hands and feet. That said, he is certainly wholly embraced by his dedicated fan base in this country. I'm not sure why I'm not more recognised for what I do, but it doesn't matter." I do a lot of work around the world to bring awareness to the problems we face regarding Aboriginals in this country, so whether that makes me an outsider in conservative Australia, I don't know. I'm a huge advocate for our country, our culture, our Aboriginal culture, the oppression of the Aboriginal people and the oppression of our land in Australia. "Quite often I'll do interviews in Australia and people have no idea that I even play overseas. "Nup, I don't feel recognised really," says the laconic Rudd, speaking from a tour bus in Wyoming in the US. Does he feel recognised in Australia for his extraordinary success as an export? Since his seventh and most recent album, 2012's Spirit Bird, Rudd has twice toured across both the UK/Europe and US/Canada and has played more than 110 international shows. The 35-year-old Byron Bay-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist undertook his first international tour in 2000, when he toured Canada, where he sold out rooms even before he had released an album. Low-key presence: Xavier Rudd has a dedicated fan base in Australia, but a wider following overseas.
